Ergonomic office chairs put to the test - we compare the best back-friendly desk chairs for you. Find out everything you need to know about prices, quality, experiences and much more about ergonomic office chairs at a glance! Back pain is the undisputed number 1 widespread disease in Germany. Around 18 million people in Germany suffer acute or chronic back pain. So the likelihood that you too will be affected one day is not at all small. There are many different causes for this. However, it is mainly sitting a lot that causes back pain in the long term. To help prevent back pain, we present various ergonomic office chair models and their benefits below.
Back-friendly & healthy office chairs
If you sit at your desk for long periods of time every day, an ergonomic office chair is definitely an advantage to alleviate back pain or, in the best case, even prevent it in the first place. There are various features that such an ergonomic office chair should have in order to achieve the best possible effect for good back health. In general, the office chair should be ergonomically designed in accordance with DIN standard EN1335. In most cases, the models declared as ergonomic office chairs meet this standard.
First and foremost, the chair should have an ergonomically shaped backrest. This allows the spine to be supported precisely. If the backrest is also sufficiently high, it provides the best possible support for the entire back and helps to relieve pressure on the cervical spine. The height of the chair should also be adjustable so that it can be adapted to the length of the lower legs. Your chair is at the optimum height when the angle between the upper and lower legs is at least 90°, while the feet are fully on the floor. This ensures that different people can sit on the chair. It is also advantageous if the seat depth of the chair can be adjusted so that the seat surface can be optimally adapted to the thigh length of the person sitting on it. To ensure that the blood flow is not interrupted, the distance between the front edge of the seat and the hollow of the knee should be around two to three centimetres.
Relaxed at the workplace with an ergonomic office chair
The majority of the body weight is carried by the lumbar spine. This is why back pain occurs most frequently in this area. An ergonomic office chair should therefore have a lumbar support. This makes it possible to support the lower back area. It is ideal if it can be adjusted in height and the pressure on the back can be fine-tuned. This means that the lower back is in permanent contact with the backrest, stabilizing and relieving it over a long period of time and enabling an ergonomically correct posture. An office chair is also particularly easy on the back if it has armrests that are adjustable in height, width and depth. Resting your arms on the armrests relieves the strain on your shoulders and neck. They are also helpful when getting up and sitting down if you can lean on them. Some office chairs even have armrests with a swivel function that can move the supports inwards and outwards, providing even better support for the natural curve of the forearm.
To be able to react to different work situations, there is a rocking function. This allows you to tilt the backrest backwards in a range of around 90° and 120°. The type of tilt can also be controlled on higher quality models. If you set the tilt resistance and the tilt limiter correctly, the natural change of sitting position is encouraged. The chair follows the user's movements, so to speak. This is also known as dynamic sitting. A headrest can provide relief for the head, neck and shoulder area. It helps to relax the upper back area and achieve a more comfortable sitting posture without having to bend forwards spasmodically. This is because we tend to bend forward constantly, especially when working at a computer screen for long periods. However, headrests are not an absolute must. Back-friendly office chairs are often built without such a headrest, as the main function is to support the lumbar region. The DIN standard does not require a headrest for ergonomic office chairs.
An important feature of back-friendly office chairs is the synchronous mechanism. The chair reacts to the user's movements and thus provides optimum support. The chair adapts to you, not the other way around. When you lean back, you will notice that the backrest moves slightly further back than the seat. This increases the opening angle, which in turn leads to different muscles being alternately strained and relieved. In this way, the office chair follows the body's natural urge to move. As you alternate between the front, middle and rear sitting positions, active-dynamic sitting is encouraged. This permanent support for a productive working posture means that symptoms of fatigue occur much more slowly.
By the way: This adaptation to the user's movements is what characterizes ergonomics. Ergonomics is the optimal mutual adaptation between people and their working conditions. Orthopaedics, on the other hand, is the science of identifying and treating congenital or acquired defects in the human musculoskeletal system.
Optional features such as deep suspension or a high load-bearing capacity are also available for an office chair. The depth suspension ensures that compression and bruising of the intervertebral discs is prevented by protecting the back from painful jolts when sitting down. People with a higher body weight should make sure that the chair has sufficient load-bearing capacity. Such chairs also offer a little more space and freedom of movement.
An overview of the features of ergonomic Bürost chairs
Orthopaedic chair recommendations
In general, the recommendations and requirements for an ergonomic office chair are very similar. They should have the features that have already been described in more detail in the previous section. The basic requirement is an adjustable seat height. This makes it possible for the chair to be used by different people. It is also much healthier if the height of the chair is adapted to the user's body size. Furthermore, the backrest should be adjusted as closely as possible to the user's body size and ideally be height-adjustable. To protect against back pain, the backrest should reach at least the height of the shoulder. As people differ in the length of their legs, an ergonomic chair ensures that the seat depth can be adjusted. An ergonomic office chair is also characterized by the individual adjustment of the seat tilt and armrests. Both features ensure a healthy and comfortable posture when sitting.
In addition, the backrest is sprung. The backrest should provide support for the back and give it adequate force when leaning against it. The backrest spring force can often be adjusted manually. When leaning back, the seat surface should barely rise. The seat surface must therefore have a certain degree of stability. If you spend a long time on your office chair every day, comfort must not be neglected either. The office chair should therefore have comfortable and hard-wearing upholstery. This ensures optimum pressure distribution and prevents persistent discomfort. A water vapor-permeable fabric also prevents sweating.
Not only ergonomic, but also visually an eye-catcher
All these features enable dynamic sitting, which is the main characteristic of the ergonomic office chair. The ergonomic office chair adjusts to the natural movements of the back and follows these movements. This means that the chair adapts to the user and not the other way around. By adapting to the natural movement sequences, a continuous dynamic is created. This is known as dynamic sitting. The constant movement prevents the user from adopting a rigid resting position. This constant posture is usually the cause of back pain. The interaction of these functions with the correct sitting position achieves the greatest effect. Orthopaedists recommend using the entire seat surface right up to the backrest. The upper and lower arms should form at least a right angle when the forearms are placed on the desk. If your feet are not resting on the floor in this sitting position, it is advisable to use a footrest. If you place your feet on the chair's swivel base too often, this leads to an incorrect sitting posture. Swollen legs or pain can be the result. In addition, the space under the desk should offer enough freedom of movement.
Desk chairs & office swivel chairs in the test
Whether at work, in the home office or in the children's room: you usually spend a long time on office chairs every day. To make working on these chairs as comfortable and healthy as possible, they should meet certain requirements. Find out below what these requirements are and what special features there are for rostühlen.
Orthopädische Bürostühle in the test
Orthop mobile office furniture should fulfill a range of functions to make everyday work as pleasant as possible. First of all, it is important that the seat height of the chair can be adjusted. This is a kind of basic requirement. If your feet are on the floor and your knees form at least a 90° angle, you have adjusted the height of the chair perfectly. The backrest should also be adjusted as closely as possible to the user's body height. Back pain can be avoided if the backrest reaches at least the height of the shoulders. It is also important to set the correct seat depth. The distance between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knees should be around two to three centimeters. Postural problems can also be avoided by adjusting the seat angle individually. Another feature of orthopaedic office chairs is the adjustability of the armrests. They should be adjusted so that you do not feel constricted when working. The suspension of the backrest helps to ensure that the back is supported and that adequate force is applied when leaning against it. The seat surface should also be very stable and hardly rise when leaning back. Comfortable and hard-wearing upholstery ensures a high level of comfort when working.
An orthopaedic chair should combine all these elements. If you combine these elements with the right sitting position, it makes working much more pleasant and significantly more back-friendly. The entire seat surface should be utilized. The upper and lower arms should form at least a right angle when the forearms are placed on the table.
Backrest with lumbar support in the test
The lower back area is almost the most common area for back pain. The reason for this is that the majority of the body weight is carried by the lumbar spine. An ergonomic office chair should therefore have a lumbar support. But what exactly is a lumbar support and what are its benefits?
The lumbar support, also known as the lumbar vertebrae or lumbar support, is part of the backrest. It is modeled on the human spine, as it takes into account the forward curvature of the spine in the lumbar region - the lordosis. Due to its shape, it should adapt perfectly to the user's back and body size. The lumbar spine area is particularly stressed by long and rigid sitting, for example in an office or car. This leads to poor posture in the lower back, which in turn often causes severe pain. In some cases, the pain can also radiate from there into the leg. The purpose of the lumbar support is to support the lumbar vertebrae during long periods of sitting without movement and thus prevent incorrect posture and pain. Ideally, the lumbar support should be individually adjustable, as every back is different. In particular, the curvature and height of the support should be adjustable. Pay attention to your well-being when adjusting the lumbar support and adapt it to your needs. Whether the support is located in the inwardly curved area of the lower spine or a little lower, on the bony ridge - the important thing is that you adjust the support according to your well-being so that it provides comfortable and upright support.
Active sitting can also help to reduce or even prevent lower back pain. So try to change your sitting position as often as possible to keep moving. You can find out exactly what is meant by active or ergonomic sitting in our blog post “Ergonomic sitting in the home office”.
Headrest with headrest in the test
A headrest or neckrest is not always absolutely necessary for the chair to be as ergonomic as possible. Many people do not need an extra neck support and do not suffer from it, as the neck and throat muscles can usually support the head very well. However, if you often suffer from neck or throat pain after work, a height-adjustable neck support may be useful. It can help to support the head and thus relieve pressure on the cervical vertebrae in particular, but also on the back. It is important that the headrest is adjustable, because to be able to use the full function, you need a headrest that is perfectly adjusted to you. The depth of the headrest should be adjusted so that the head does not fall backwards or forwards. The adjustment should be relatively simple, as an incorrect head position is quite uncomfortable for most people. A headrest is therefore an advantage, but for many it is just another aid and not a direct remedy for back or neck pain.
Disc supports in the test
Intervertebral disc chairs are all chairs designed to provide the best possible relief and protection for people with existing back pain. This can reduce sick days without causing further damage to yourself. What is important for intervertebral disc supports is that they can be customized in many respects. This is because everyone has different needs depending on their clinical picture and body structure. In addition, the chair should be well sprung in order to avoid shocks and compression of the spine, which can lead to severe pain in the case of an existing clinical picture. An ergonomically shaped seat surface is also a must to avoid pressure points on the legs and buttocks. Breathable upholstery and cover material also help to avoid pressure points. All the important factors for intervertebral disc pain summarized once again:
- Adjustable seat height
- Adjustable seat depth
- Adjustable backrest height and inclination
- Dynamic backrest (scope in inclination) to enable active sitting
- seat depth suspension
- Adjustable armrests
- ergonomically shaped seat surface

Stool & office stool in the test
We have also extensively tested stools and ottomans in another test report. You are welcome to read our report “Ergonomic stools in the test” to find out which stools are our test winners and what is important for a stool for the office. Our personal top product is the “Aeris Swopper”. The stool is ideal for long periods of sitting in the office or home office. It can be moved forwards, vertically and sideways to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles. Due to the lack of a backrest, stools generally have the advantage that the back muscles remain in constant motion, are not fatigued and are strengthened over time. So if you want to strengthen your back in the long term (which is usually recommended), a stool may even be a better choice than an office chair. In any case, active sitting is particularly encouraged on a stool. Find out more in our article and train your back with one of our ergonomic stools.

What should an ergonomic office chair be like?
An ergonomic office chair should meet a wide range of requirements. It should support a good sitting posture and encourage the sitter to move so that the back muscles remain strong. It should also offer enough space for the sitter and be individually adjustable.
