Swivel chairs: ergonomic design classics

In our wide range of swivel chairs and cantilever chairs, you will find real design classics and very modern designs whose ergonomic quality is not obvious.
The Vitra Panton Chair and Mies van der Rohe's Bauhaus original MR10 have made the principle of the cantilever chair famous. Whether made of tubular steel, wood or other materials, cantilever chairs look stylish and yet always allow a healthy, back-friendly sitting position.
The free suspension of the seat, which springs back a little with every movement, means that the body is constantly activated when seated. This loosens up the rigid sitting posture, gets the circulation going and increases your ability to concentrate. Thanks to the deep suspension of the seat surface, less strain is placed on the spine when sitting down, which is particularly pleasant for people with disc problems and overweight people. Some ergonomic models support this deep suspension with a lateral movement of the seat.
Our range includes real design classics among cantilever chairs, such as Mayer mySYMPHONY metal-framed cantilever chairs, Dauphin conference chairs or the Aeris Oyo cantilever chair.

Swivel chairs and cantilever versions

Swivel chairs cut a fine figure both in the conference room and in the waiting area and offer your guests and visitors a very comfortable seating experience.
Cantilever chairs belong to the group of motion chairs, but depending on their intended use, they are also classified as visitor chairs or conference chairs. Depending on what you primarily want to use a cantilever chair for, different models and features are available.
Some cantilever chairs only rock very slightly or not at all, but can be stacked to save space or pushed under the table. Other models are very flexible and allow you to sit at your desk for longer periods without tiring, as they are also equipped with armrests.

Please note: cantilever chairs are not suitable as ergonomic seating for the entire eight-hour working day, as their seat is not height-adjustable.

FAQ

1. What are cantilever chairs?
Cantilever chairs are chairs that do not have two legs at the back. These are replaced by an S-shaped curved frame on which the seat rests. Due to the curved design, the backrest of most models flexes to a greater or lesser extent when you lean back.

2. Who invented the cantilever chair?
The rights to the first cantilever chair were disputed for a long time. The architect Mart Stam is considered to be the inventor of the design of the (not yet springy) cantilever chair. Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer further developed the concept into a tubular steel cantilever chair, and van der Rohe applied for a patent for his MR20 cantilever chair.

3. What is the Panton Chair?
With the advent of plastic as an affordable, freely moldable material, completely new forms for mass-produced furniture became possible. The Panton Chair is a one-piece molded swing chair in Pop Art design, which Verner Panton designed for Vitra and which was mass-produced from 1967. Since then, there have been countless imitations of the Panton design.

4. Are cantilever chairs ergonomic?
Cantilever chairs are very ergonomic due to their springy suspension, as they absorb and transmit the kinetic energy of the spine. The slight rocking movements when sitting are a micro-training for the muscles. People who are overweight or have disc problems benefit from the fact that the chair gently cushions the spine when sitting down hard.
